Our Community

In Agbokpa, Ghana, people still practice open defecation, pooping on the outskirts of the village. This is left for the girls to sweep into the forest the next morning. Some may also venture outside of the village to defecate. This can be a very risky trip especially if it’s late at night. Our group wants to put and end to these unsafe trips and set up restrooms which will improve sanitation in the community. This will enable there to be bathrooms inside the community which will eliminate the need to sweep or go outside the village.

As a result, it is incredibly important for us to come up with an appropriate solution for our community that the people themselves will be willing to participate in. This prompts the question: How can we make our sanitation model ACCESSIBLE for the entire community?

We also did a little research on the sanitation levels of Ghana for background. We found this chart.
